Daily Wellness Breaks

Designing a centralized wellness experience to help employees discover resources, build healthier work habits, and take meaningful breaks throughout their workday.

Overview

The Daily Wellness Break page was created to support Alberta Blue Cross® employees in building healthier work habits by encouraging regular moments of pause throughout the day. The page brought together wellness education, break ideas, employee testimonials, and supporting resources into one engaging experience.

The goal was to make wellness breaks feel accessible and achievable while helping employees overcome common barriers such as lack of time and forgetting to step away.

The Challenge

Employees understood the importance of wellness but often struggled to prioritize breaks during busy workdays. Existing wellness information was distributed across different resources, making it difficult to discover practical ways to incorporate wellness breaks into daily routines.

The challenge was to create an experience that not only informed employees about the benefits of wellness breaks but also encouraged them to take action.

01

Encouraging behavior change

Employees identified lack of time and forgetting to take breaks as key barriers. The page needed to provide simple, realistic ways for employees to build wellness breaks into their existing routines.

02

Making wellness content engaging

Wellness information needed to go beyond educational content by providing relatable examples, employee experiences, and inspiration that encouraged participation.

03

Creating an accessible resource hub

The experience needed to organize wellness information, activities, and resources into a clear structure that employees could easily explore during their workday.

Discovery

I collaborated with the Senior Communications Officer and Wellness team to understand employee wellness needs, identify content priorities, and determine how the experience could better support daily wellness habits.

Research Methods

Employee survey insights

Reviewed wellness survey findings to understand employee barriers and motivations. The survey identified that the biggest challenges to taking wellness breaks were lack of time and forgetting to step away from work.

Stakeholder feedback

Worked with the Wellness team and Communications team to understand the goals of the initiative, refine content priorities, and ensure the page aligned with employee wellbeing objectives.

Analytics baseline

Established Google Analytics 4 measurements before launch and compared engagement metrics after release to evaluate awareness and interaction with the new resource.

Key Insights

Employees did not need more wellness information. They needed a supportive experience that made taking wellness breaks feel simple, achievable, and easy to incorporate into their daily routine.

Design Approach

The design focused on creating a welcoming and actionable experience that helped employees understand the value of wellness breaks and discover ways to participate.

Educate and motivate

Introduce the benefits of wellness breaks while showing how small moments of pause can improve focus, creativity, and wellbeing.

Make content actionable

Provide practical ideas, tips, and resources that employees could immediately apply to their daily routines.

Build connection through storytelling

Use employee testimonials to make wellness breaks feel relatable and demonstrate how different people incorporate breaks into their workday.

Design Process

Content Audit

Reviewed wellness content and identified opportunities to organize information into a clearer journey. Instead of presenting wellness information as standalone resources, content was grouped around employee needs and actions.

Design Opportunity

Introduction & purpose of wellness breaks

The value of wellness breaks was explained, but the key message could be made more engaging and easier to understand quickly.

Create a stronger introduction that clearly communicates the purpose and benefits of taking wellness breaks.

Benefits of wellness breaks

Important information was presented as educational content but lacked visual hierarchy to help employees quickly scan key benefits.

Use clear sections and visual elements to highlight mental health, physical health, and productivity benefits.

Employee testimonials

Key information was buried within long text sections.

Create a dedicated testimonial section that highlights real employee experiences and builds trust.

Wellness break inspiration

Ideas for taking breaks needed clearer grouping to help employees find activities that matched their interests and needs.

Organize activities into categories such as movement, creativity, connection, and relaxation for easier discovery.

Tips and resources

Practical guidance existed but required better organization to help employees overcome barriers like lack of time and forgetting to take breaks.

Create a structured tips section with actionable strategies and supporting resources.

Wellness programs, videos, calendars, and office resources

Supporting resources were available but needed clearer pathways for employees to continue exploring wellness opportunities.

Add clear calls-to-action and resource links to help employees take the next step.

Information Architecture

Created a page structure that guided employees through a natural progression:

Understand → Get Inspired → Take Action → Continue Exploring

Employees first learn why wellness breaks are important, then explore different activities, and finally access resources to help them maintain the habit.

Wireframes & Iterations

Explored different content layouts to determine how to balance educational information, testimonials, and wellness activities.

Iterations focused on:

  • Improving content hierarchy
  • Breaking up large sections of text
  • Creating clear pathways to resources
  • Making the page easier to scan

Final Design

Clear Content Structure

The final design transformed wellness information into an engaging, easy-to-follow experience.

Key design elements included:

  • Wellness break inspiration categories such as movement, creativity, and connection
  • Employee testimonials to create relatability
  • Clear tips for overcoming barriers like time and forgetfulness
  • Direct access to wellness programs, videos, calendars, and resources

Why it matters

Following the launch of the Daily Wellness Break page, the resource saw significant growth in awareness and engagement. The increase in active users, engaged sessions, and page views indicates that more employees were discovering and interacting with wellness resources.

The redesign helped create a centralized destination where employees could learn about wellness breaks, find inspiration, and access resources to support healthier daily habits.

Reflection

This project highlighted the importance of designing experiences that support real employee behaviors. By combining education, storytelling, and actionable resources, the Daily Wellness Break page helped make workplace wellness feel more approachable and easier to integrate into everyday routines.
